Corolla is the northern most town on the Outer Banks and has seen major development during the last twenty years. Up until 1984 when the state extended our highway 12 (the beach road) from Dare County, Corolla was just a small seaside village. Now there are huge multi-million dollar homes which have made Corolla one of the most demanded vacation destinations in the USA. Once this road was opened, it required the relocation of one of Corolla’s most famous attractions, the wild horses. For safety reasons, these wild Mustangs were moved to the northern four wheel drive beaches of Carova, Penny’s Hill and Swan Beach.

These wild Mustangs have called Corolla home for over 400 years! They are descendants of the Spanish Mustangs who first came ashore with the Spanish conquistadors back in the 1600’s.

The beaches of Corolla have been described by USA Weekend as “one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the east Coast”. Corolla is also home to one of the largest landmarks in the area, the Whalehead Club. Built by Edward Collings and Marie Louise Knight, who resided here until late 1934. This marvelous estate now serves as a park and tourist attraction. The 21,000 square foot park houses a private residence, footbridge and boathouse which are open from sunrise to dusk. This wondrous complex was once used as a private waterfowl hunting base for the super wealthy. In 1873 construction began on the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and it’s the only North Carolina lighthouse still housed in the original structure. This 180 foot “must see” is open for climbing in the summer months and features a small museum and the restored lightkeeper’s house.
