Are Dogs Allowed on Outer Banks Beaches?
Generally, yes. Dogs are allowed on Outer Banks beaches, as long as you follow the pet rules. Most towns require leashes, and some have time restrictions.
Here are pet policies, by beach, in the Outer Banks:
Corolla
Dogs Allowed? Yes.
Leash Required? Yes. There is no length requirement for leashes, but pups must remain on a leash at all times, regardless of the time of year.
Duck
Dogs Allowed? Yes.
Leash Required? No! Dogs can roam off-leash on the beach year-round. Owners must make sure they’re in control of their pets, though! We wouldn’t advise bringing your pup here if they don’t get along well with other dogs or aren’t easily called back to you. Well-trained pups will have a blast, though!
Southern Shores
Dogs Allowed? Yes (seasonally)
Leash Required? Yes
Southern Shores is not as receptive to pets, but they’re still allowed at certain times. From May 15-September 15, pets are only permitted on the beach during non-peak times (before 9 AM and after 6 PM), and they must be on leashes no longer than 10 feet.
Kitty Hawk
Dogs Allowed? Yes.
Leash Required? Most of the time, yes. From the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day, between the hours of 10 AM-6 PM, dogs must be on a leash no longer than six feet. The leash laws are a bit less strict in the off-season, with retractable leashes up to twelve feet allowed. If you have a well-behaved pup who won’t disturb beachgoers, they may be off-leash in the off-season. You must stay within thirty feet of them when they’re off leash, and carry a leash in hand!
Kill Devil Hills
Dogs Allowed? Only service dogs during peak hours in peak season, other pets welcome beyond the hours of 9 AM-6 PM, as long as they’re leashed.
Leash Required? Yes. Leashes should not exceed 6 feet.
Nags Head
Dogs Allowed? Yes.
Leash Required? Yes. Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round, as long as they’re on a leash!
Which Beaches Are Most Pet-Friendly?
Arguably, we would say Duck, Corolla, and Nags Head. If you want to keep your pup off-leash, Duck is your best bet.
What About Cape Hatteras National Seashore?
Cape Hatters welcomes pets! Keep them on a six-foot leash and enjoy the National Seashore with them.
Local Dog Parks
The beach is great, but sometimes you want to take your pup somewhere designed for dogs. If you want to tire your pup out for the day, a trip to the dog park is the perfect solution. Plus, you can get to know other dog owners! Check out these local dog parks.
Mary’s Paws Park
- This dog park has designated areas for large, small, and senior dogs/dogs with special needs, so your pup doesn’t have to feel intimidated by playing with dogs much larger or more spry. There’s plenty of shade, room to run, obstacles and toys, and even a dog-washing station!
Roanoke Island Dog Park
- Roanaoke Island dog park is open to visitors, but you must fill out an application before arrival.
Nags Head Dog Park
- Nags Head is a great option for owners, with plenty of space for your pets to run around. Last summer, they hosted Waggin’ Wednesdays every Wednesday, with a doggie pool for splashing and crafts for humans to complete.
Kitty Hawk Dog Park
- Like Roanoke Island, visitors must also fill out an application before attending.
