What is America 250?

America 250 celebrates the 250th anniversary of American Independence, which officially began on July 4th, 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. North Carolina was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from England, and our state has accomplished some pretty incredible things in the two centuries since the country’s inception, including becoming the birthplace of modern aviation!

We are also home to the first English colony in the Americas, Roanoke Island, and the Outer Banks served as the site of several seizures of British ships during the American Revolution (though much of the fighting in-state took place further inland near the Cape Fear River). Without North Carolina’s influence, the country would not be what it is today! The Outer Banks is a wonderful place to celebrate America’s achievements and look forward to a bright future.

Are There America 250 Events All Year Long?

Yes, there are. Though many America 250 events focus on the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (July 4th), there are patriotic events going on all year! Whether you want to honor the Wright Brothers’ achievements on Wilbur Wright Day or spend a day at the Daire County America 250 Fair, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the United States before July 4th.
