Kiteboarding
Nearby Hatteras Island is known as the “Kite Boarding Capital of the East Coast”, and the sound side of the Outer Banks is also perfect for the sport because of its shallow waters and consistent winds. What is kiteboarding, you ask? It’s a popular water sport that combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, and sailing. We know it sounds intense, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a lot of fun!
Surfing
You don’t have to be on the West Coast to hang ten! Surfing is just as much fun on the Outer Banks for many folks. In fact, it’s rated by many as the #1 surfing destination on the East Coast! Top surfing destinations include Hatteras Island, Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills, Northern beaches in Corolla and Duck, and Jennette’s Pier in Nag’s Head. The best time to go surfing in OBX is fall and winter for large waves, and summertime for beginners. Conditions change fast, so always make sure to check them before you head out!
Kayaking
Kayaking is a more relaxing alternative to some of the heart-pumping activities in our guide! OBX’s calm waters make it a great place to paddle through, whether you’re on a peaceful sound-side ride or adventuring out to more scenic water trails.
You can kayak through coastal marshes, along quiet canals, or even spot wildlife like birds, fish, and dolphins along the way. Rentals and guided tours are widely available, so it’s easy to get out on the water whether you have experience or not.
Jet-Skiing
On the other hand, if you’re craving speed and a little adrenaline, jet-skiing is a fun way to experience OBX waters. Riders can zip across the sound while enjoying wide-open views of the coastline. How incredible is that?! Many rental companies offer guided jet ski tours, which are a great option for first-timers or anyone who wants to learn a little bit before jetting out into open waters.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Stand-up paddleboarding is a favorite Outer Banks water sport for good reason. SUP offers a full-body workout while still feeling nice and calm, especially on the sound where the water stays smooth and steady. It’s a great option for beginners, early morning paddlers, or anyone looking to take in gorgeous Outer Banks views at a slower pace. Paddleboarding also pairs well with wildlife spotting and sunset excursions on the water. Don’t let the pace fool you, though. This is an intense core workout! You may be sore the next day.
Parasailing
Though there are many options to choose from when it comes to getting a bird’s-eye view of the Outer Banks, parasailing is tough to beat. This exhilarating activity lifts you high above the water while a boat gently tows you along the shoreline. From above, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the ocean, sound, and barrier islands below. Parasailing is surprisingly smooth and quiet, making it a great option even if you’re not usually a thrill-seeker!

Frequently Asked Questions
Should we book water sports before we arrive or wait until we’re there?
Book in advance for anything that requires boats, guides, or time slots (parasailing, jet skis, tours). Casual rentals like kayaks or SUPs can sometimes be booked closer to arrival, but availability is never guaranteed in peak season.
Are OBX water sports good for families with kids?
Yes, but choose age-appropriate activities. Sound-side kayaking, SUP, tubing, and parasailing are popular family options, while ocean surfing and kiteboarding are better for teens or adults with experience or lessons.
What time of day is best for OBX water sports?
Mornings are typically best, especially for kayaking and SUP, thanks to calmer winds and smoother water. Afternoon winds increase—great for kiteboarding, but less ideal for paddling or glassy conditions.
