Well it was nice but we found 3 pieces of clothing which tells us that it wasn’t totally cleaned. The sheets are very old and need replaced as well as mattresses. The home could use a wiring update because there are not enough outlets. Lastly the toilets are sitting to close to the floor, they are outdated. Deck chairs are awesome and I would recommend this cottage to anyone but it does need some updates. I forgot, the Furnace/AC filter hasn’t been changed in a LONG TIME.

The sheets are picked up and delivered weekly so I am surprised to hear that the sheets were old.
I have forwarded the filter issue to our maintenance department.
I do wish you would have called us on these issues, they would have been rectified immediately, except for the toilets which I will pass on to the owner.

House full of fleas :(

Very nice house near the ocean. BUT. Despite no pet policy house was full of fleas. It looked like somebody before us came with a dog or even dogs as nobody from Carolina Shores ever check what is going on in the house. Fleas bit me, my husband and my kids badly which ruined our vacation started so perfectly. When we told to management about the problem, they said that it is probably SAND FLEAS!! who bit us. I have all the photos of fleas and bites, so these are not just words. Feel sorry for the next people who will be having their vacation in this house.

We have loved staying at the Gray house. Unfortunately this was our last stay as pets are no longer allowed. I have enjoyed every year and am so grateful to the owners for allowing me to have time at their home. No better getaway in OBX!!! The view of the beach is amazing. The morning sunrise is spectacular. You will not be disappointed.

This was the second summer we rented this house and we’re already set to rent it again next year. We’ve made it our own little family ritual and I couldn’t be more pleased. The house is humble and perfect. The wood paneled walls lined with old family photos dating back to the 60s and potentially beyond, create this time capsule of familial love and relaxation. The view and location cannot be beat! Minutes from a convenience store and family favorite restaurants (our favorite - Goombay’s!) We can’t wait to continue to rent this house for years to come.

I am from Edenton and I spent most of my summers as a young child at the beach near Avalon Pier @ my uncles cottage. The Gray House was right there I the same location and it brought back so many memories. The cottage was right in the middle of everything and so convenient. The cottage was so close to the ocean you didn't even have to go to the beach, you could just relax on the porch and still feel like you were on the beach. The inside was all Carolina knotty Pine and it was gorgeous! It was an old school cottage and is what the OBX is all about. I only wish they would move the toilets so they have more room. It is very uncomfortable for an adult in the position they are in. A doggie gate would be great as well. But in general this cottage is a 13 out of 10!! The cleaning crew needs to step it up. We left it cleaner than we found it. Also some new furniture would be nice!

We had a wonderful stay in the "Gray House" last week. While the road it's located on is bit scrappy, the location directly on the beach is hard to beat. Also, the house is a real home versus just a "rental" property. It also has old-school charm with the knotty pine walls, harkening back to a past age. Very functional and strategically located for access to the Southern and Northern sections of the Outer Banks. By far the best attribute of the home is the porch with its classic views of the sea. We enjoyed our coffee in the mornings here and our cocktails in the evening.

Overall we had a great experience in the "Gray House." The deck was the best feature and we enjoyed our evening coffee watching the ocean. The house is very dated and the bathroom situation is interesting and tight. However, being on the beach helps you look past those flaws. Ps. The internet connection is not good. Being a small business owner, that was very frustrating losing calls and not being accessible.

Our family (my husband, two college-age kids & me) enjoyed our stay in the Gray House! Very cozy & traditional OBX cottage with direct beach access. Great home layout with 1.5 baths & plenty of comfy beds. Loved the back deck & the outdoor shower was perfect! The indoor tub/shower unit was a bit dark when the the shower curtain was drawn. I ended up using the outside shower instead but it was a great alternative with warm water & a roomy stall complete with a dressing area. We love Avalon Beach so this property was a perfect fit for us.

First, we would like to thank The GRAY Family for letting us into their home. We admired your family pictures on the walls. We really enjoyed our vacation and The Gray House did not let us down. You feel as if you are "Back In Time" The house was clean and the staff was very helpful. If you are looking for "Modern/New" do not stay here. However if you want the "TRUE BEACH EXPERIENCE" this is the place for you. Walking distance to the pier & restaurants it's in the perfect location. We do plan on staying here again.

We arrived around 4pm Sat and were informed of the mandatory evac Monday afternoon, noonish when we returned from the beach. It was a short stay. The weather was beautiful while we were there and I love the house. The only reason I gave my overall experience a 3 stars was because of Florence and the evac. The home is in a spectacular location and the staff at Carolina Shores is excellent and always helpful!!!

We had a sister trip here which included our families and it was a great house with nice bedrooms and AC for those hot nights. We loved the proximity to the beach and walking distance to Awful Arthur's. It's also near several grocery stores and the mini-golf. We would come again!

The house IS on the beach, 8 or so houses from the Avalon Pier. The interior wood work was a welcomed step back in time. Real wood paneling and ceilings, hardwood floors, give this home a cozy feeling without being small. Parking under the home and towards Virginia Dare. There are houses close on each side, but there was still privacy on the back deck, the outdoor shower on one side blocks direct view and the story and a half on the other side sits lower than the deck. Smartly placed foot wash area on the back steps, enclosed shower on the back deck, a shower under the home and a hose and sprayer right next to the parking area. Bedrooms not too small, btw, you're at the beach, why would you be in your room other than to sleep or change clothes? Being a pet friendly, we did not find any trace another pet had ever stayed there. (bravo to the cleaning crew)yeah the appliances are a bit outdated, but they all worked just fine. The nearly hidden upstairs access, small stage like landing to the bedrooms, dressers in every room, will sleep way more than you think, if you have a big family. If you're tired of painted modern drywall, this is the place to go! The back deck has the new composite chairs and table, you can get the same sun as sitting in the sand, without the sand, or move back under the porch roofs if you get too much but still want to be outside and not in the sand. Having rented many times on the barrier islands, this is by far our favorite.

We rode into town as Irma was still threatening to come up the coast. It was windy for the first couple of days and fortunately for us that was all she brought. The rest of the week was sunshine and in the 80's. Perfect. This is our 2nd year at the Gray House and again, we cannot say enough about the cabin by the sea. Since last year the owner tore out the carpet, put in new windows, a new door and added a lot of extra wood to shore up the existing structure. The upgrades were great. I am so grateful the owners share their cottage with us and our 4 legged family!! Thank You! The staff at Carolina Shores is spectacular. Again, helpful, pleasant and a pleasure to deal with. Thank You for all your help!

Location & view are great! House is old, but only two major problems: The two bathrooms are disaster areas & should be combined into a single, properly sized, modern bathroom; and the door knobs & locks need to be replaced.

For a one month, spur of the moment decision it was very easy to find and rent this place. My two cousins were able to come for a few days and we had some decent weather (plenty of surf!) to visit and enjoy the house. There is plenty for a person (s) to see and do here, (my first time). I would have taken the ferry circle if not for the windy conditions (for me, that us, lol)

This was our second time staying in the Gray House and as always, it was a great time. I am hesitant to list all of its charms, for selfish reasons, it is truly a little gem of a house! This home feels like home and really does have the BEST deck on the beach. Location is another attribute, as everything is within 5 minutes, so you have plenty of much needed beach time. My husband said "I don't care how successful we are, or if we can afford a larger house for vacation, this place is us and we will always come back here". The home accommodated our family of six nicely with plenty of room to spread out. We will be booking again for 2016! Our family loves The Gray House.

the house itself is great, and you can't beat the location. The house however which advertised central air, did not get below 80 degrees and the tech who came twice was not able to repair. Was not until the end of the week that a tech was able to get working.
